"Oh the packaging looks good... maybe I should give it a try."
"Oh, the cover of that comic looks interesting, it might be worth a read."
"Oh, that box of candy looks so colourful, wonder if it tastes any good?"
I used to collect note pads, not that I've that much homework and notes, but purely coz the cover looks good. Saving all my spending money on cute looking stationery became a habit which resulted in a drawer full of pens, pencils and erasers.
When I was ten, I lost my pencil case on the way home and after calculating, my stationery in there was worth thirty bucks .... and each day I get fifty cents allowance coz my mum packed lunch for me... but the joy of starting a new collection soon put my young mind off the loss.
A lil older, when my bedtime curfew passed 12, I found myself sitting alone in the living room after midnight (my biological clock was ruined ever since I was a kid and I tried to stretch my curfew every now and then) watching the only programs on air, which was either a rerun of "Days of our Lives" or home shopping. Totally mesmerized by the latter, it made me think, wow that set of pots looks amazing and ohhhhh that blender looks good. Never had I realized that the power of marketing was actually brainwashing me all those times.
Even till today, I still lose control once in a while. Just the other day while out at the supermarket, I've convinced the cow to get this pack of kippers (and I don't even like fish!!). Reason for buying? Coz the colour scheme of the packaging looks nice. Sob.
Its funny how simple things like colours and fonts plays around with a shopper's mind. Thank God I'm not residing in Japan, if not we'd be paupers for sure.
